On October 17, 2021, Devan Greer, a 32-year-old African American male, was fatally shot in the Carondelet neighborhood of Saint Louis, Missouri. The incident occurred at a bus stop located near the intersection of South Grand Boulevard and Bates Street. Police officers responded to the scene after reports of gunfire and discovered Greer suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite emergency response efforts, he succumbed to his injuries.
The events leading to the shooting reportedly began at a nearby Walgreens store where the girlfriend of the suspect, 22-year-old Dylan G. Anthony, was employed. Reports indicate that Greer had been previously identified as a nuisance at the location, prompting Anthony to confront him and ask him to leave the premises. The verbal confrontation escalated as Greer walked away toward a bus stop, with Anthony following him. At the bus stop, the situation turned physical, resulting in Anthony drawing a pistol and firing two shots at Greer.
Following the shooting, Anthony fled the scene but surrendered to law enforcement the following day, turning over the weapon used in the altercation. Authorities subsequently charged him with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. During the legal proceedings, the defense argued that Anthony had acted in self-defense, claiming he feared for his life during the physical struggle. The case went to trial, where a jury ultimately accepted the self-defense claim and acquitted Anthony of all charges, finding him not guilty of both second-degree murder and armed criminal action.
