In the late hours of a Saturday night in downtown St. Louis, a heated argument between a husband and wife escalated into a tragic act of violence that left one of them dead. On March 5, 2022, 48-year-old Lisa Cannaday was shot multiple times as she was getting out of her husband's car near the intersection of North 4th Street and Washington Avenue.
The couple had just left a party, but the celebratory atmosphere had soured, giving way to a fatal confrontation fueled by suspicions of infidelity.
Lisa Cannaday's husband, Jerome Cannaday, was the one who pulled the trigger. After shooting his wife, he drove away from the scene, leaving her lying in the street. However, his flight was short-lived. A few blocks away, he stopped the car and called 911 to report the shooting. When emergency services arrived, they found Lisa with multiple gunshot wounds. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, but her injuries were too severe, and she was pronounced dead.
Jerome Cannaday was taken into custody shortly after the incident. He was initially charged with first-degree murder, armed criminal action, and unlawful possession of a firearm. The case proceeded through the legal system, and eventually, Jerome Cannaday opted for a plea deal. He pleaded guilty to the reduced charge of voluntary manslaughter and armed criminal action. As a result of the plea agreement, the unlawful possession of a firearm charge was dismissed.
In the end, Jerome Cannaday was sentenced to a total of 18 years in prison for the death of his wife. The sentence consisted of 15 years for voluntary manslaughter and an additional three years for armed criminal action, with the terms to be served consecutively.
