Zenobia Johnson, a 25-year-old female, was discovered suffering from fatal gunshot wounds inside a vehicle in the Marine Villa neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri, on April 17, 2020. Police officers responded to the scene in the 3600 block of South Broadway, where they found her in critical condition. She was immediately transported to a local hospital but succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The incident marked a violent end to a week that had already seen tragedy strike at her very doorstep.
Just three days prior to her death, on April 14, Johnson had been present during a homicide inside her own apartment, located near where her body would later be found. In that earlier incident, 19-year-old Malik Henderson was shot and killed upon entering her residence. Johnson cooperated with authorities, telling investigators that Henderson was a friend who possessed a key to her home. She explained that another man, who had been in her apartment to socialize, made her feel uncomfortable and ultimately shot Henderson when he walked through the door. The shooter fled the scene, leaving Johnson as the sole witness to the crime.
Homicide detectives quickly connected the two violent events, theorizing that Johnson was targeted to eliminate her as a witness to Henderson's murder. Evidence collected from the apartment included a fingerprint on a glass that investigators linked to Darrell Fisher III. Furthermore, surveillance footage from the night of Johnson's death captured a Ford Fusion, registered to Fisher's mother, circling the area near her apartment. The video showed the vehicle following Johnson as she drove down the street, and a man was seen approaching her car and firing multiple shots before fleeing. Cell phone data also placed Fisher in the vicinity of both murders at the times they occurred.
Following the investigation, police arrested Darrell Fisher III, charging him with two counts of first-degree murder and armed criminal action. Prosecutors argued that Fisher killed Henderson and then returned days later to silence Johnson because she had spoken with the police. The case proceeded to court, where Fisher faced a jury trial. The first attempt to try the case ended in a mistrial after jurors were unable to reach a unanimous verdict. In a retrial that concluded in May 2022, a St. Louis jury acquitted Fisher of all charges, finding him not guilty of the murders of both Johnson and Henderson. Defense attorneys successfully argued that the evidence against him, which relied heavily on cell phone location data and license plate readers, was circumstantial and insufficient to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
