On May 7, 2023, the life of Aaliyah LaJoyia Gillom, an 18-year-old African American female, was tragically cut short in a violent incident in Saint Louis, Missouri. The shooting occurred in the early morning hours, around 2:00 a.m., within the Hyde Park neighborhood of North St. Louis. Officers from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to the 2000 and 2100 blocks of Branch Street following reports of gunfire, where they discovered a chaotic scene involving multiple
victims.
Upon arrival, first responders found four teenage girls who had been struck by gunfire. Aaliyah, a resident of the Castle Point area, was discovered at the scene suffering from fatal gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead shortly after. Near her, authorities also found the body of 18-year-old Asia Baker from Spanish Lake, who had also succumbed to her injuries. Two other surviving victims, an 18-year-old female shot in the abdomen and a 17-year-old female shot in the arm, were transported to a local hospital, with the older survivor listed in critical condition at the time.
The St. Louis police Homicide Division immediately took over the investigation, combing the residential area for evidence and potential witnesses. Despite the severity of the quadruple shooting, initial reports from the department did not release descriptions of any suspects or announce immediate arrests in the days following the attack. The violent event marked a particularly deadly weekend for the city, contributing to a string of shootings that left the community and the victims' families searching for answers regarding the identities and motives of those responsible.
