In Kansas City, Missouri, on March 14, 2022, a life was abruptly cut short, leaving a family to grapple with a sudden and violent loss. Kirk Michael Whittaker, a 34-year-old male, was fatally shot while sitting in his car at a gas station in the afternoon. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Whittaker had moved to the United States at the age of 18 on an athletic scholarship and eventually settled in Kansas City.
He was a father to a daughter and was remembered by loved ones for his passion for music, cooking, and soccer.
The events leading to his death unfolded around 1 p.m. in the 8100 block of Bannister Road. Responding to a reported shooting, police officers discovered Whittaker unresponsive in the driver's seat of his black Lexus sedan with a bullet hole in the driver's side window. He was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The investigation into his death quickly focused on a man who was seen on surveillance video interacting with Whittaker just before the shooting.
The suspect, identified as Camoi Hendricks, was seen on video getting into Whittaker's vehicle on two separate occasions outside the gas station. A witness who was on the phone with Whittaker around the time of the incident told investigators they overheard a conversation that they believed might have been related to an illegal transaction. Following the shooting, Hendricks allegedly fled the scene in his own vehicle.
In the course of the investigation, Hendricks was taken into custody and interviewed by detectives. He reportedly admitted to being at the scene to sell marijuana to Whittaker. According to court records, Hendricks claimed that a struggle ensued over a gun inside the vehicle, which ultimately led to the fatal shot being fired. Subsequently, Camoi Hendricks, 29 years old at the time, was charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the death of Kirk Whittaker and was held in the Jackson County jail.
