On the early morning of August 6, 2017, a tragedy occurred in south Kansas City involving a young child. Officers from the Kansas City Police Department were summoned to a residence located in the 9600 block of Lydia Avenue around 1:15 a.m. following a call reporting a shooting. Upon arrival, emergency responders found 2-year-old Jedon Edmond Jr. suffering from a gunshot wound inside the apartment.
The toddler was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment, but he
was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Initial reports from the scene had conflicted regarding the child's age, with early statements suggesting the victim was five years old, but police later corrected this information to confirm he was two. Investigators determined that the gunshot wound was self-inflicted, characterizing the incident as an unintentional discharge of a firearm found within the home.
Jedon’s father was present in the apartment at the time of the shooting and was the individual who contacted authorities. He remained at the scene to speak with law enforcement. In the days following the death, police stated that the investigation was ongoing, but no details regarding arrests or charges filed against the father or any other individuals were released to the public in the immediate aftermath of the incident.
