In the Bronx, a burst of gunfire shattered the afternoon calm on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, claiming the life of 27-year-old Javier Saul. The fatal encounter unfolded around 3:35 p.m. near the Bronx Zoo on East 187th Street, just blocks from Saul's home. Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene, with some accounts suggesting a car chase preceded the deadly shooting.
Saul was inside his own car when occupants of a black SUV reportedly exchanged gunfire with him.
During the shootout, he was struck in the torso. Despite his grave injury, Saul managed to get to St. Barnabas Hospital, reportedly transported by a taxi he had called. Tragically, medical efforts were in vain, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The brazen daylight shooting left the Belmont community shaken. Police from the 48th Precinct responded to the scene, where they found shell casings littering the pavement and an uprooted street sign, testament to the violence that had just occurred.
