The disappearance of Douglas "Dougie" Paul Crawford has left his family and the community of Vinton, Louisiana, searching for answers since March 20, 2021. On that Saturday, the 66-year-old was last seen at the Vinton Motel located in the 1100 block of Highway 90 East. According to witnesses, Crawford allowed some individuals to use his vehicle while he stayed to rest in one of the motel rooms. When they came back approximately two hours later, Crawford was nowhere to be found. His cellular phone was discovered near the motel, and the individuals who had borrowed his car used it to contact his family by calling back a missed call, which is how his loved ones were alerted to his absence. His family officially reported him missing the following day, March 21, 2021. A significant challenge in this case is that Crawford is unable to speak due to a past medical procedure for throat cancer, which required a tracheotomy. Although the tube had been removed prior to his disappearance, it left him without the ability to talk, and he communicated by writing on a pen and notepad. He often wore a bandana or other covering over the deep, circular scar on the center of his neck. At the time he went missing, Crawford was described as a white male with graying brown, shoulder-length hair, brown eyes, and a light brown mustache. He also has scars on his right arm and lower back. He was last seen wearing a gray long-sleeved thermal shirt, blue jeans, and black sneakers. He was also wearing black sunglasses and may have had reading glasses with him. The investigation into Douglas Crawford's disappearance has been fraught with difficulty, leaving his family in a state of prolonged uncertainty. His son described his father as acting normally in the days leading up to his disappearance and stated that his father had no known enemies and it was uncharacteristic for him to leave without warning. Adding to the mystery is the fact that while he may have had his wallet and a debit card, he left behind $8,000 in his bank account, which has remained untouched. The Vinton Police Department has investigated, conducting numerous interviews and following up on any available leads, but has not yet found a clear path to determining what happened to him. Over time, his family has come to believe he is no longer alive but still holds out hope for closure and the chance to lay him to rest. The case of Douglas Crawford is an overview of a man who vanished under puzzling circumstances, a situation made more complex by his inability to call out for help, leaving those who care for him to continue their search for answers.
