A family vacation to Hawaii took a tragic turn in June of 2026, when 49-year-old Sung Kwun Jo and his 16-year-old son, visiting from South Korea, vanished while hiking near Honolulu. The father and son were last seen on June 23, 2026, after leaving their Waikiki hotel around 7 a.m. to hike the Hanauma Bay Rock Bridge Trail. Concerns for their safety arose when they failed to return, and family members reported them missing.
The situation grew more alarming when two hikers discovered a backpack containing the elder Jo's personal belongings, including his phone and wallet, near the "Rock Bridge" area of the trail at approximately 9:00 a.m. Shortly after, authorities located their rental car near the trailhead entrance, prompting the initiation of a comprehensive search operation.
