Piotr Drabik, a 34-year-old Polish scientist and accomplished adventurer, went missing on September 1, 2006. At the time of his disappearance, he was a post-doctoral fellow at the National Institute for Nanotechnology in Alberta, Canada. Drabik was a distinguished academic with two doctoral degrees and three master's degrees from a Polish university.
His interests extended beyond his scientific work to include mountaineering, having climbed Mount Everest, trekking, and various other outdoor activities.
Drabik's intended journey was a two-week vacation in Hawaii, where he planned to visit Molokai and climb a cliff there. His travels began in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, from where he flew to Salt Lake City, Utah. He was last seen at the Salt Lake City International Airport, carrying a red backpack and two walking sticks, and was scheduled to board a Delta flight to Honolulu. Initially, authorities doubted he had reached Hawaii as there was no record of him boarding his connecting flight. However, it was later discovered that he had purchased a ticket from Honolulu to Kauai, Hawaii, on September 4, three days after he was last seen in Utah.
Despite this new information, Drabik's whereabouts remained unknown. He was known to keep in close contact with his family, including his young daughter in Edmonton, but there has been no communication from him since August 31, 2006, the day before his disappearance. His credit cards have not been used since he vanished. The lack of contact was uncharacteristic for him, causing concern among his loved ones.
Authorities in both Utah and Hawaii have investigated his disappearance. Searches were conducted in Hawaii based on the theory that Drabik may have had a hiking accident, but these efforts yielded no clues. His ex-wife expressed her belief that he may have met with an accident while hiking in Hawaii, a sentiment shared by his parents. The case is being handled by the Utah police.
