In the winter of 2021, a young man's life was tragically cut short in Atlanta, Georgia. Geoffrey 'Geo' Canty, a 19-year-old male, was killed on December 11, 2021, in what was later revealed to be a gun sale that turned into a fatal robbery. The incident, which took place during Canty's lunch break from work, saw him shot three times in the stomach, and he was left to bleed out in the parking lot of his job.
The investigation into Canty's death led to the arrest of Shamel Quinton Crowder.
Evidence presented during the trial showed that Crowder had arranged to sell Canty a gun for $300. After Canty paid him the money, Crowder used the very same gun to shoot him, keeping both the money and the weapon. A key piece of evidence in the prosecution's case was Crowder's own Instagram posts, where he had stated his intention to 'pop and dip' just minutes before the murder.
In a trial where the only eyewitnesses were the suspects themselves, a jury found Shamel Quinton Crowder guilty on multiple counts, including malice murder, felony murder, and aggravated assault. For his role in the death of Geoffrey Canty, Crowder was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 25 years. Following the conviction, the Clayton County District Attorney's Office expressed their hope that the verdict would bring a measure of peace to Canty's grieving family.
