In the late morning of November 27, 1998, a two-car collision occurred on Saddle Road in Hawaii County, near mile marker 46. Among the passengers was a 61-year-old man known as Bob Sabaratnam. Following the accident, witnesses saw Sabaratnam exit the vehicle he was in and walk away from the scene, accompanied by his dog. This would be the last time he was seen.
