Robert Arvin, a 49-year-old sailor, set off from Honolulu, Hawaii, on July 14, 2008, aboard his 30-foot sailboat, *Ua Noa*, with plans to sail to San Diego, California. He had informed a friend that he would be taking a southerly route, expecting to arrive around September 1. Arvin's sailboat carried limited fuel, and it was assumed he would rely mostly on the wind during his journey. However, by September 10, the Coast Guard issued a notice for his overdue vessel.
