Matthew Glen Moribe, a 39-year-old resident of Honolulu, was an avid fisherman who cherished his time on the ocean. His life was deeply rooted in Hawaii, where he was born and raised. He was a man of many talents and commitments, working as an Operations Manager at Aala Meat Market, Inc., and as a Technician at the Pearlridge Monorail Operations Center.
Moribe also had a distinguished career with the Hawaii Air National Guard, from which he had recently retired as a Technical Sergeant Integrated Avionics Craftsman in the 154th Maintenance Squadron. His more than two decades of service included several overseas tours, earning him numerous awards for his dedication and service to his country.
On March 17, 2019, Moribe was on his 18-foot boat, fishing approximately 24 miles south of Oahu. While attempting to reel in a fish, he was witnessed falling overboard. He tragically submerged and did not resurface. The incident prompted an immediate and extensive search of the surrounding waters in an effort to locate him. The Coast Guard, along with volunteers, scoured the area, but their efforts were to no avail. After a thorough search, the Coast Guard made the difficult decision to suspend their active search for him.
The news of Matthew Moribe's disappearance was a profound loss to his family and community. He is survived by his wife, parents, brother, and extended family. A program to honor his life was held on April 27, 2019, at Saint Andrew's Cathedral in Honolulu, bringing together those who knew and loved him to pay their respects. The case is a somber reminder of the unpredictable nature of the sea.
