In March of 2007, 75-year-old Antonio 'Tony' Castro was enjoying an extended visit with his daughter and her family in the beautiful South Kihei area of Maui, Hawaii. A resident of Los Angeles, California, he had been on the island since early February of that year. A man of routine and simple pleasures, Tony maintained a healthy lifestyle through proper diet and regular exercise. His daily ritual included a short, 10-to-15-minute swim in the tranquil waters of Keawakapu Beach, a place he loved. This daily dip was more of a brief immersion than a strenuous swim, a moment to connect with the ocean before returning home. A grandfather and a husband of over 50 years, Tony was a man who found joy in his family, his faith, woodworking, and watching his favorite baseball teams.
On the afternoon of March 14, 2007, Tony headed out for his customary swim at Keawakapu Beach, near the Mana Kai Resort. He was last seen around 5:00 p.m., wearing a pair of black swim shorts. When he failed to return as expected, concern began to mount. A search of the beach revealed his shirt and goggles left behind on the shore, but of Tony himself, there was no sign. An immediate and extensive search was launched by the Maui Police Department, the fire department, and the Coast Guard, combing the waters and the coastline for any trace of the missing man. Despite their efforts, the official search was called off after several days with no results.
In the wake of the official search's suspension, Tony's family, refusing to lose hope, organized and funded their own private search efforts. Family members flew in from California to distribute flyers and hire a private helicopter and dive team to continue looking for him. A significant detail emerged when his family discovered that he had missed several doses of his thyroid medication. According to his doctor, this could lead to disorientation and memory loss, opening up the possibility that he may not have entered the water at all, but instead wandered off in a confused state. This theory was bolstered by the fact that no one had actually witnessed him going into the ocean that day. Despite these exhaustive efforts and the enduring hope of his loved ones, Antonio Castro was never found, and his disappearance remains an unsolved missing person case.
