On September 25, 1982, 22-year-old James Francis Schroeder was on a hunting trip with two friends in the vast and rugged backcountry near Grangeville, Idaho. At some point during their expedition, Schroeder separated from his companions with the intention of hunting on his own. He was equipped for the wilderness, carrying a 7mm rifle with approximately 11 to 13 rounds of ammunition and a hunting knife.
