Kelly Lee Phillips, a 69-year-old man from Grangeville, Idaho, was last seen on August 24, 2021. An avid outdoorsman, Phillips was known to frequent the wilderness areas in Idaho County. Prior to his disappearance, he had informed acquaintances of his intention to go camping along the South Fork of the Clearwater River, a familiar area where he had spent time mining. This communication on August 23, 2021, was the last known contact anyone had with him.
Concern grew when he failed to return or make contact, leading a friend to report him missing to the Idaho County Sheriff's Office on September 7, 2021. At the time of his disappearance, Phillips was described as a white male with gray or partially gray hair, green eyes, and a mustache. He stood 5'11" tall and weighed approximately 170 pounds.
The investigation into Phillips's disappearance led authorities to locate his white 1991 Toyota pickup truck off State Highway 14, near Fall Creek at milepost 35.2. Witnesses reported seeing the vehicle parked in that location with its hood up on August 23 and 24. Inside the truck, investigators found a note indicating he was having mechanical problems with the vehicle, and the keys were left in the ignition. Notably, the truck did not contain any of the camping or mining equipment that Phillips typically carried on his excursions. Extensive searches of the dense wilderness surrounding the location of his truck were conducted by the Idaho County Sheriff's Office and Grangeville Mountain Rescue, but yielded no trace of the missing man.
Further investigation into the circumstances surrounding Phillips's disappearance revealed that he had been in very poor health. Friends reported that he had made statements suggesting he was preparing for the end of his life, telling one friend that the "sand in my hourglass is running out." He had also written a letter to his family indicating he was at the end of his days and had begun giving away his personal possessions. In a poignant gesture, he sent gold pieces he had mined to his grandson in Pennsylvania as a birthday gift. These actions have led investigators to believe that Phillips may have intentionally walked into the wilderness to end his life.
