On October 5, 2018, 26-year-old Terrence Shamel Woods Jr., a television production assistant from Maryland, vanished under mysterious circumstances while working on a documentary series in the remote wilderness near Orogrande, Idaho. He was part of a 12-person crew filming “Gold Rush: Dave Turin’s Lost Mine,” a Discovery Channel series produced by the UK-based company Raw TV.
The shoot took place in the rugged Nez Perce National Forest, near the Penman Mine, an area characterized by dense forests, steep terrain, and limited accessibility.
In the days leading up to his disappearance, Woods informed both the production company and his family that he intended to cut his trip short, citing concerns over his mother's health. On the day he went missing, crew members reported that Woods exhibited unusual behavior, including an attempt to grab a drone out of the sky and experiencing an apparent anxiety attack. As the crew wrapped up filming for the day, Woods told a local woman assisting with transportation that he needed to use the bathroom. Moments later, he dropped his radio and belt, then sprinted down a steep cliff into the forest. Despite immediate attempts by crew members to follow him, the challenging terrain hindered their efforts, and Woods disappeared into the dense woods.
The Idaho County Sheriff's Office was notified of Woods' disappearance at 6:41 p.m. that evening. Due to the late hour, the search did not commence until the following day. Over the next six days, search and rescue teams, including ground searchers, dog teams, and helicopters equipped with heat-detection technology, scoured the area but found no trace of Woods. The search was officially called off after a week, with authorities citing the lack of leads and the challenging terrain.
Woods' family has expressed skepticism regarding the circumstances of his disappearance. His father, Terrence Woods Sr., questioned the narrative provided by the production crew, particularly the account of his son's sudden departure into the forest. He also highlighted the pristine condition of his son's belongings, noting that everything in his suitcase was neatly folded, except for a pair of muddy boots. The family has also raised concerns about potential racial dynamics, as Woods was the only Black crew member on the shoot, and they believe he may have felt intimidated or mistreated by his colleagues.
Raw TV has denied any allegations of mistreatment or withholding information, stating that they cooperated fully with the investigation and provided support to Woods' family. They emphasized the challenging nature of the terrain and the exhaustive efforts made during the search. The Idaho County Sheriff's Office has maintained that there is no evidence of foul play, but the case remains open, pending any new leads.
