Ronald Scott Gray, a 62-year-old retired Marine and former Massachusetts State Police captain, disappeared on September 19, 2008, while on an elk hunting trip in Idaho. Gray, who lived in North Brookfield, Massachusetts, had traveled to the Nez Perce National Forest in Idaho for an extended hunting trip with friends. His last known sighting was in Idaho County on September 19, 2008, when he parted ways with his companions after deciding to stay behind and continue hunting for a few more days.
He was scheduled to meet his outfitter on September 23 at a designated location but never arrived. His friends waited three days before reporting him missing.
An extensive search followed, involving helicopters, local law enforcement, and volunteers. Gray was familiar with the terrain, having visited the area twice before, and was reportedly in good health at the time. Searchers found some of his personal belongings, including a backpack near Highline Lake, but no trace of Gray himself was ever uncovered. Despite thorough searches, including an investigation into the possibility he went fishing in nearby Jim Creek, the efforts to locate him proved unsuccessful.
