In the vast, unpredictable waters off the coast of Hawaii, a day of fishing turned into a story of loss and unending questions for the family of Charles Nathan Locklar. Originally from Arizona, the 26-year-old was enjoying time with his uncle offshore from Lapakahi State Park in Kawaihae, Hawaii. The two were in a small ten-foot skiff when the weather took a turn, and high winds reportedly caused their boat to capsize and sink, leaving them in the open ocean.
Faced with a life-or-death situation, both men decided to swim towards the shore, a distance of about half a mile. Charles’s uncle recounted seeing his nephew swimming ahead of him, approximately 200 to 300 feet from the shoreline. However, when the uncle finally made it to the safety of the land, he discovered that Charles was nowhere to be seen.
The initial hope for a swift rescue prompted an immediate and extensive search operation. The U.S. Coast Guard, alongside the Hawaii County Fire Department and the Navy, launched a comprehensive search effort that spanned air, sea, and land. Crews utilized assets including an HC-130 Hercules airplane, MH-65 Dolphin and MH-60 helicopter crews, Coast Guard cutters, and a response boat. The search was exhaustive, covering more than 2,878 square miles over a period of four days. Despite these valiant efforts and the wide saturation of the area with search and rescue assets, there was no sign of Charles. An Urgent Marine Information Broadcast was also issued, asking all mariners in the vicinity to be on the lookout and report any sightings. The search began on the evening of his disappearance and continued relentlessly, but as time passed, the hope of finding him alive began to fade.
The official search for Charles Locklar was eventually suspended. The decision was a difficult one, made after all available leads and resources had been exhausted without success. Captain Michael Long of the Coast Guard Sector Honolulu expressed the heartbreak of the decision, offering sincere condolences to Charles's family and friends during their incredibly difficult time. Charles was described as a white male with blond hair and blue eyes, standing at 5'11' and weighing around 155 pounds. He had a distinctive tattoo of a bicycle on his shoulder and another tattoo on his forearm. While he is presumed to have drowned, his body has never been recovered, leaving his loved ones without a final sense of closure.
