Michael A. Johnson Jr.: The South Side Strangler

Early Life

Born on September 5, 1985, in Chicago's South Side, Michael A. Johnson Jr. faced numerous challenges from birth. He was born missing three fingers on his right hand, a condition possibly linked to his mother's substance abuse during pregnancy. His father abandoned the family when Johnson was five, leaving him and his six siblings under the care of their neglectful mother. She often resorted to physical abuse, using electrical cords, and isolated her children from the outside world, preventing them from attending high school. Financial hardships led his mother to prostitution, while Johnson would beg for food at local stores. In 2006, he met Tena Anderson at a friend's birthday party, and they had a child together in 2007. Despite securing a job at FedEx in April 2008, Johnson's financial struggles persisted, leading to homelessness and eventual unemployment.

Crimes

Between August 2008 and May 2010, Johnson embarked on a series of violent assaults and murders targeting women in Chicago, particularly in the South Side area. His modus operandi involved luring victims, often sex workers, to secluded locations where he would assault and, in several cases, murder them.

Victims

• August 2008: A 43-year-old sex worker met Johnson at a gas station and agreed to have sex for money. After she refused a specific act, Johnson became enraged, choking her until she lost consciousness. He sexually assaulted her and threw her off a second-story balcony, leaving her in an alleyway. She survived but suffered severe injuries, including a collapsed lung and lacerated liver.
• November 2008: Eureka Jackson, 38, was found strangled in a boarded-up building in the West Pullman neighborhood. Her shirt was tied around her neck and attached to a closet door handle.
• January 2010: Leslie Brown, 28, was discovered frozen and nude at 119th and Wentworth. An autopsy confirmed she had been strangled.
• March 2010: Candice Franklin was attacked in the Roseland neighborhood. Johnson choked her until she was unconscious, raped her, and left her for dead. She later awoke with severe injuries but survived.
• March 2010: Siobhan "Shay" Hampton, 30, was found strangled near Harold's Chicken Shack.
• May 2010: Lutelda Hudson, 29, was discovered strangled in an abandoned building.
