William Clyde III Gibson
Background
William Clyde Gibson III, born on October 10, 1957, in Raleigh, North Carolina, is an American serial killer and rapist currently on Indiana's death row. He is known for the sexually-motivated murders of three women between 2002 and 2012. Gibson has claimed responsibility for upwards of 30 additional murders across multiple states, none of which have been confirmed.
Crimes
Gibson's crimes were brutal and heinous. He was convicted of three murders, each with disturbing details:
- Karen Sue Hodella: Disappeared on October 10, 2002. Her body was found on January 7, 2003, on Emery Crossing Road, near the Ohio River, in Clarkville. She was stabbed multiple times in the throat.
- Stephanie Marie Kirk: Met Gibson on March 24, 2012, and was murdered on March 25, 2012. Her body was found buried on Gibson's property. She was raped, strangled, and sexually assaulted post-mortem.
- Christine Whitis: Murdered on April 18, 2012. Whitis was sexually assaulted, strangled, and mutilated. Her body was found in Gibson's garage, surrounded by garbage bags.
Arrest and Trial
Gibson was arrested on April 19, 2012, after his sister discovered Whitis's body in their mother's home. He was initially held on drunk driving charges but was later charged with the murders of Whitis and Hodella. During questioning, Gibson confessed to Kirk's murder and led police to her body.
