On the early morning of May 14, 2022, violence erupted in a parking lot located at 313 North Boonville Avenue in Springfield, Missouri. At approximately 1:48 a.m., officers from the Springfield Police Department responded to reports of a shooting at the downtown location. Upon their arrival, first responders discovered a chaotic scene where two men had sustained gunshot wounds. One of the victims, identified as 20-year-old male Kylon McAfee, was found in critical condition.
Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries.
Alongside McAfee, another victim, 23-year-old Malik Sutton, was also struck by gunfire during the incident. Sutton was transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment but later died from his wounds, making the event a double homicide. Authorities reported that a third male victim arrived separately at a hospital with a gunshot wound that was determined to be non-life-threatening. He received treatment and survived the encounter.
Detectives from the Springfield Police Department launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, which marked the city's fifth and sixth homicides of that year. Despite the public nature of the crime scene and the involvement of multiple victims, investigators initially struggled to identify a perpetrator. In the period following the murders, law enforcement released statements indicating that no suspects had been identified and no arrests had been made. The case remained an active investigation as police continued to appeal to the public for information regarding the individuals responsible for the deaths of McAfee and Sutton.
