In late July 2017, the community near Springfield, Missouri, was shaken by a tragic sequence of events involving a local father and his two young sons. Authorities were called to a residence in rural Webster County, just outside the Springfield metropolitan area, following reports of a house fire. Upon arrival, emergency responders discovered the bodies of three individuals inside the burning home.
The deceased were identified as 45-year-old Robert Kinney, a male resident of the area, and his two children, seven-year-old Robert 'Robbie' Dale Kinney Jr. and five-year-old William Kinney.
The investigation, led by the Webster County Sheriff’s Office, quickly transitioned from a fire inquiry to a homicide investigation as the cause of death for the children became clear. Autopsies and forensic evidence revealed that the two young boys had suffered fatal gunshot wounds before the fire was set. The Sheriff, Roye Cole, publicly stated that the evidence pointed to a murder-suicide scenario. It was determined that Robert Kinney had shot both of his sons and then set the family home ablaze before turning the weapon on himself.

The boys' mother, Liegh Ann Malone, had separated from Kinney and was navigating a contentious custody situation. Despite reports made to the Missouri Children’s Division suggesting a risk of danger, investigators noted that there had been insufficient documentation at the time to justify immediate intervention or the removal of the children from their father's visitation access. The tragedy occurred shortly after the couple’s divorce had been finalized.
Due to the nature of the incident, with the sole suspect being the deceased father, no arrests were made in connection with the deaths. The case was closed as a murder-suicide, leaving the community and the surviving mother to grapple with the loss of the two young boys and the violent conclusion to the family's domestic struggles. The authorities concluded that Robert Kinney was the sole perpetrator responsible for the deaths of his children and his own subsequent suicide.
