On May 17, 2022, law enforcement officers responded to a residence in Halfway, Missouri, following a 911 call reporting a suicide. The caller, Lucky J. Johnson, claimed that his wife, 27-year-old female Darrianna Merynn Johnson, had shot herself while he was asleep in their shared bed. Upon arrival, deputies discovered Darrianna deceased inside the home with a single gunshot wound, and a 12-gauge pump shotgun was observed resting parallel to her body, pointing toward her head.
The
initial report of suicide was quickly met with suspicion as investigators examined the scene. Detectives noted that the physical evidence, specifically the angle of the shotgun and the nature of the injuries to the victim’s cheek and jaw, was inconsistent with a self-inflicted wound. Gunpowder evidence found on the bedsheet and the wound did not align with the husband's account of events. Furthermore, a subsequent review of phone records revealed that Lucky Johnson had contacted another woman prior to calling emergency services. When interviewed, this woman confirmed she was in a romantic relationship with him, providing a potential motive that contradicted his initial statements.
Following a thorough investigation involving the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control, authorities determined the death was a homicide. On October 13, 2022, Lucky Johnson was formally charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. The case proceeded to a week-long jury trial in Polk County more than three years after the incident.
On November 6, 2025, the jury returned a guilty verdict, convicting Lucky Johnson of both first-degree murder and armed criminal action. He was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder charge, with an additional 15-year sentence handed down for the armed criminal action conviction. The successful prosecution was attributed to the collaborative efforts of local deputies, state investigators, and the Attorney General's Office, bringing a measure of justice to Darrianna's grieving family and children.
