On August 1, 2022, a violent domestic disturbance erupted at a residence in the 6500 block of Bartmer Avenue in University City, a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri. The incident began when 22-year-old Chappelle Taylor arrived at the home to confront the mother of his child. The situation quickly escalated into a heated argument involving Taylor and the residents of the home.
During the confrontation, Taylor brandished two firearms and began shooting, targeting the occupants of the house.
Darrell Jefferson, a 52-year-old male, was present at the scene and attempted to protect his family during the altercation. He sustained fatal gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead shortly after the shooting. His daughter, who was the mother of Taylor's child, was also struck by gunfire and was transported to a hospital in critical condition. Authorities later noted that a 2-year-old child was in the room where the bullets penetrated, though the child was not physically harmed during the attack.
Law enforcement identified Chappelle Taylor as the primary suspect in the homicide and assault. Following the shooting, Taylor fled the scene but was subsequently apprehended by police. During an interview with investigators after being read his Miranda rights, he reportedly admitted to firing the weapons and discarding them. The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office charged Taylor with multiple felonies, including second-degree murder, domestic assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and three counts of armed criminal action. A judge set his bond at $500,000 as the legal proceedings commenced.
