On August 7, 2016, Cory Goodwin, a 38-year-old White male, was fatally shot inside an apartment in the Forest Park Southeast neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri. The incident took place late that Sunday evening at a residence located on Chouteau Avenue, which belonged to an acquaintance named Huston Martin IV. Goodwin was visiting the apartment when a gunman entered the premises and opened fire.
Both Goodwin and the 41-year-old Martin suffered fatal gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene.
A third individual, Clinton Martin, who was Huston Martin's brother, was also present during the attack and sustained critical injuries. He was shot in the chest, mouth, and finger but managed to survive the assault. Due to the severity of his condition and the circumstances of the crime, Clinton Martin remained in the apartment, bleeding and unable to summon assistance for nearly 20 hours before he was eventually discovered and rushed to a hospital for emergency treatment.
Authorities identified the shooter as Miquis Crumble, who was 19 years old at the time of the murders. Investigators determined that the violence stemmed from an ongoing dispute and tension between Crumble and Huston Martin IV regarding a romantic interest in a woman. Following the shooting, law enforcement launched a search for Crumble, eventually taking him into custody. He was initially charged with multiple felonies, including two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Goodwin and Martin.
As the case moved through the legal system, Crumble, then 21, reached an agreement with prosecutors just as his trial was set to commence in August 2018. He entered a guilty plea to reduced charges of two counts of second-degree murder and one count of first-degree assault for the wounding of the surviving victim. Consequently, a judge sentenced Miquis Crumble to serve a total of 45 years in prison for his role in the triple shooting.
