In the late summer of 2022, the quiet woods of St. Clair, Missouri, became the scene of a grim discovery. On September 2nd, Hugh T. Campbell, a 53-year-old male resident of Villa Ridge, was found deceased on Dry Branch Road. He had been in the area clearing timber when his life was abruptly ended. The Franklin County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene at approximately 1:20 p.m. and found Campbell with a gunshot wound.
An autopsy later confirmed that a gunshot was the cause of his death.
The investigation into Campbell's death quickly gained momentum. Just two days later, on September 4th, the Franklin County Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant at a residence in Lonedell, Missouri. During the search of the home belonging to 59-year-old James R. Friedmann, an improvised explosive device was discovered. This prompted the involvement of the St. Louis County Regional Bomb and Arson squad, who were able to defuse the device at the scene. Friedmann was taken into custody at that time on a no-bond warrant for unlawful possession, transport, manufacture, repair, or sale of an illegal weapon.
As the homicide investigation continued, the focus remained on Friedmann. On September 15, 2022, the Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney's Office filed additional charges against him in connection with Hugh Campbell's death. Friedmann was charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. Following these new charges, his bond was set at $500,000.
