On the evening of November 1, 2022, violence erupted in the Kingsway East neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri, claiming the life of 22-year-old Nicholas Lotts. The young man was in the 4700 block of Greer Avenue when shots rang out just before 8:00 p.m. First responders rushed to the scene, but Lotts had sustained fatal injuries during the incident.
Alongside him, a 19-year-old male was also struck by gunfire and was transported to a local hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
Investigators with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department immediately began working to piece together the events that led to the deadly encounter. In the initial stages of the inquiry, detectives identified and detained two individuals they believed might be connected to the shooting. The subjects, a 38-year-old man and a 26-year-old man, were taken into custody for questioning regarding their potential involvement in the homicide and the assault on the surviving victim.
Despite the early apprehension of these persons of interest, authorities did not immediately file formal charges. After being held and interviewed, both men were released pending further investigation. Law enforcement officials indicated that they needed to gather more evidence to proceed with a criminal prosecution. The case remained open as detectives continued to seek leads that would help clarify the motive and circumstances surrounding the death of Nicholas Lotts.
