Caucasian male Charles McBride, 42, became the victim of a violent fatal shooting in the Carondelet neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri, on the night of October 29, 2023. The incident unfolded in the 7800 block of Rio Silva Place, where McBride had traveled to a vacant apartment building with the intention of conducting a drug transaction. A female witness, who had accompanied him to the location, waited outside in a vehicle while McBride entered the premises.
Shortly after he went inside, the stillness of the night was broken when the woman heard two distinct gunshots ringing out from within the building.
Following the gunfire, a man exited the apartment complex and immediately targeted the waiting witness. Descriptions provided to investigators detailed the assailant as wearing a red, white, and blue coat. He approached the woman’s vehicle, brandished a firearm at her face, and aggressively demanded drugs. After seizing a watch and loose change from the car, the gunman fled the scene in a silver vehicle. When authorities arrived at the location around 10:40 p.m., they discovered McBride’s body in the kitchen of the vacant apartment, where he was pronounced dead from his wounds.
Homicide detectives quickly launched an investigation that led them to 42-year-old Edward J. Gray. Police linked Gray to the crime after discovering that his phone number had been used to call McBride shortly before the shooting occurred. Additionally, the witness was able to positively identify Gray as the gunman from a police lineup. Investigators established that the meeting had been arranged for McBride to sell drugs to Gray, a transaction that turned deadly.
Edward J. Gray was subsequently taken into custody and held at the St. Louis jail without bond. Prosecutors filed multiple felony charges against him in connection with McBride's death, including first-degree murder and armed criminal action. He also faced charges for the unlawful possession of a firearm and the unlawful use of a weapon, marking the beginning of the legal proceedings for the fatal encounter.
