On the evening of January 15, 1998, in Gary, Indiana, a 27-year-old male police detective named Dorian David Rorex was shot and killed. Detective Rorex, a United States Marine veteran who had been in law enforcement for six years, was on duty with two other plainclothes detectives responding to complaints of drug activity.
Around 9:30 p.m., the detectives spotted an individual who matched the description of a drug dealer in the 2500 block of Tyler Street.
As they approached and identified themselves, the man began to flee. Detective Rorex gave chase, pursuing the suspect on foot. The chase ended at a fence, and as the suspect was climbing over, he opened fire on Detective Rorex. The detective was struck by gunfire once in the chest and twice in the abdomen. He was transported to Northlake Methodist Hospital where he was pronounced dead approximately one hour later.
One of the other detectives on the scene returned fire, striking the 24-year-old suspect multiple times. The suspect sustained injuries that resulted in him being paralyzed from the waist down. He was subsequently taken into custody.
The suspect was later convicted of murder. In a death penalty case, he was sentenced to 50 years in prison for the murder of Detective Rorex. In 2021, after serving a portion of his sentence, he was discharged or paroled. Detective Rorex was survived by his parents, two sisters, a brother, his expectant fiancée, and a one-year-old son.
