In the summer of 2018, the life of 23-year-old Antonio Adams, a Black male from Gary, Indiana, was tragically cut short. On July 16th, his body was discovered in an alley behind the 700 block of Georgia Street. An investigation by the Lake County coroner's office would later reveal that Adams had been fatally shot twice in the back of the head.
The grim discovery of Antonio Adams came just two days after his four-month-pregnant girlfriend was found with a gunshot wound to her head near
Eighth Avenue and Tennessee Street. Miraculously, she survived the attack and was able to provide crucial information to the police. She identified the shooter as 22-year-old Donjulian L. Hobson, a man who had been a friend since grade school and was staying at the couple's apartment.
In August 2018, Donjulian L. Hobson was formally charged with the murder of Antonio Adams and the attempted murder of his girlfriend. Despite the serious accusations and the testimony of the surviving victim, the legal proceedings that followed delivered a mixed outcome for Adams' grieving family. Hobson was ultimately acquitted of the murder charge in connection with Antonio Adams' death.
While justice for Antonio's murder remained elusive in the eyes of his loved ones, Hobson was held accountable for the attack on Adams' girlfriend. He was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to serve 38 years in prison. The verdict left the family of Antonio Adams with unanswered questions and the continued pain of their loss.
