Charles Edward McKinney, aged 51, was tragically killed on March 21, 1984, in Gary, Indiana. McKinney, who served as a Special Deputy Sheriff with the Lake County Sheriff's Department, was shot and killed during an attempted robbery. The incident occurred in front of the Alain L. Locke Elementary School at 3757 West 21st Avenue, Gary, at approximately 6:05 am. McKinney was in plainclothes outside the school when two men approached him on foot.
