In a deadly turn of events on a December evening in Gary, Indiana, 22-year-old Brandon Johnson, a male, was fatally shot. The incident unfolded when Johnson and his 21-year-old girlfriend allegedly attempted to rob two men from Illinois who had traveled to Gary to purchase a vehicle they had seen advertised on Craigslist. The pre-arranged meeting took a violent turn, leading to Johnson's death.
The prospective buyers, a 55-year-old from Olympia Fields and a 65-year-old from Chicago
Heights, arrived in the 700 block of Ralston Street around 7 p.m. on Sunday, December 20, 2015, for the supposed transaction. According to police, Johnson produced a handgun in an attempt to rob the two men. However, one of the intended victims was also armed and, in response, drew his own weapon and fired at both Johnson and his girlfriend.
Johnson was struck multiple times by the gunfire and was pronounced dead at the scene. His girlfriend sustained a gunshot wound to her thigh and managed to flee to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Following her release from the hospital, she was taken into custody by the police.
The two men from Illinois immediately contacted the authorities to report the shooting and have been cooperating with the ongoing investigation. They were not taken into custody following the incident. Police indicated that the woman was arrested pending the filing of formal charges.
