On April 4, 2009, police in Shelbyville, Indiana, responded to a distress call at a residence in the Central Park subdivision. Officers arrived at the home located in the 800 block of Highpointe Boulevard, where a violent domestic situation had unfolded. The incident escalated into a standoff, leading authorities to deploy a tactical police team to enter the property. Upon gaining access to the home, law enforcement discovered a chaotic crime scene involving multiple victims and a gunman who had barricaded himself inside.
Inside the residence, officers found 34-year-old Christine Ong deceased in a downstairs living room. She had suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head. In addition to Ong, emergency responders located another woman who had been shot in the leg but was still alive. A six-year-old boy was also found inside the home; he was physically unharmed during the violence. The injured woman was transported to a hospital for treatment, while the child was taken to safety.
The perpetrator was identified as Tan Tran, a 41-year-old man who lived at the residence and was in a relationship with Ong. After shooting the two women, Tran retreated to an upstairs area of the home where he turned the weapon on himself. Police discovered him suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries later that Saturday afternoon.
Christine Ong, a female of Vietnamese descent who had been employed as a nail technician, was remembered by her family as a dedicated worker who had moved to the United States after being born in Ho Chi Minh City. The investigation concluded that the shooting was a murder-suicide arising from a domestic dispute. No other suspects were sought in connection with the case, as the individual responsible had taken his own life following the attack.
