In the early morning hours of February 4, 2018, the quiet of a Marion, Indiana home was shattered by a tragic event that claimed the lives of two teenagers. Thirteen-year-old Alainee M. Byer, a student at Baskett Middle School, was spending the night at her father's residence. While her father was away at work, he received a notification about a potential problem involving his daughter and 17-year-old Corbin T. Page.
Rushing home, he discovered a devastating scene.
Inside the home, both Alainee and Corbin were found unresponsive. A handgun was located nearby. The two teenagers were pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 2:29 a.m. Investigators with the Marion Police Department quickly determined the incident to be a murder-suicide. It is believed that Corbin, a student at Mississinewa High School, shot Alainee before turning the gun on himself. The motive for this tragedy was reportedly the recent end of a romantic relationship between the two.
The investigation into the deaths of Alainee and Corbin took an even darker turn when ballistic tests revealed a connection to another violent crime that had occurred just a month earlier. The handgun used by Corbin in the murder-suicide was the same weapon used in the January murder of 81-year-old Gene Thompson in Jonesboro. In that incident, Corbin, accompanied by other teenagers, went to a home with the intent to rob it. He shot the man who answered the door, Larry Pavey, and then proceeded to fatally shoot Thompson, who was in his bed. The investigation into Thompson's murder led to ten other arrests, with two juveniles who were with Corbin that night being charged with false informing.
