On February 7, 2013, tragedy struck the home of Destiny Renee Pittman, a 21-year-old Caucasian female residing in Kokomo, Indiana. That evening, emergency responders were dispatched to her residence on James Drive after reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered that Pittman had suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the chest. She was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving her family and the local community seeking answers for a crime that would remain unsolved for nearly a decade.
The investigation revealed that the shooting occurred during a home invasion. Intruders had kicked in the door of the residence, which Pittman shared with her boyfriend, a female roommate, and her two young children. While the other occupants were unharmed during the incident, Pittman confronted the individuals who broke in and was subsequently shot. Detectives believed the motive for the break-in was robbery, specifically targeting drugs and cash they thought were inside the home. Despite following various leads and interviewing witnesses, the case eventually went cold, with no arrests made for ten years.
A significant break in the investigation came in late 2022 when a witness stepped forward with new information, reportedly stating that the knowledge of the crime had weighed heavily on her. This tip led authorities to identify two brothers, Jesse McCartney and Joey McCartney, as suspects. In March 2023, police executed arrest warrants for the pair. Jesse McCartney was taken into custody in Kokomo, while Joey McCartney was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Graham, Kentucky. Both men were charged with murder, robbery resulting in bodily injury, and burglary.
The legal proceedings that followed brought further developments but did not result in convictions. Jesse McCartney stood trial in August 2023, where a jury acquitted him of all charges after deliberating for less than ninety minutes. His defense presented testimony suggesting that other potential suspects were in the area at the time and highlighted that the brothers were not initially considered suspects by original investigators. Following his brother's acquittal, the charges against Joey McCartney were dismissed without prejudice by the prosecutor in November 2023, meaning the case could potentially be reopened if new evidence emerges, but for now, the death of Destiny Pittman remains without a legal resolution.
