In the summer of 2011, a life was tragically cut short in Indianapolis. Shawn Paul Terry, a 16-year-old Black male, was fatally shot on July 29, 2011. The incident that led to his untimely death unfolded at an apartment situated on North Shortridge Road. Those who knew him remembered a young man with a charismatic and loving personality, capable of making a whole room smile.
He was an active member of the Olivet Missionary Baptist Church and a student at Warren Central High School.
The events of that day stemmed from an argument that escalated to a fatal conclusion. The person responsible was 17-year-old Tavon Berry. Following the altercation, Berry shot Terry. In a calculated attempt to mislead investigators, Berry then shot himself in the leg, initially claiming that he had been the victim of a robbery. This fabricated story, however, did not hold up under scrutiny.
Law enforcement officials investigating the case soon unraveled the truth of what had transpired. Tavon Berry later admitted to shooting Shawn Terry after their argument. As a result of his confession and the evidence gathered, Berry was subsequently charged with murder for his role in the death of the teenager. The case brought to light the devastating consequences of youth violence within the community.
