In the summer of 2014, a senseless act of violence cut short the life of Harry Briggs, a 45-year-old male gas station clerk known for his kind and generous nature. On the night of June 4th, while working at Joe's Junction convenience store on West Troy Avenue and Lynhurst Drive in Indianapolis, a man entered the store with the intent to rob it. The assailant confronted Briggs and another employee before firing three shots.

Despite being rushed to the hospital and placed on life support, the damage was too severe. Surrounded by the grief of his family and friends, Harry Briggs succumbed to his injuries on June 7, 2014. Having lived and worked in Indianapolis for 14 years, his death was a significant blow to the community that knew him for his friendly demeanor and willingness to help others. In a final act of generosity, his organs were donated, offering a chance at life for four other people.
The investigation into the robbery and murder was swift, aided by surveillance footage that captured the suspect, not only committing the crime but also skipping away from the scene. The community responded with numerous tips, and six weeks after the tragic event, police arrested Desi Thomas. He was subsequently charged with two counts of murder and robbery resulting in serious bodily injury.
The legal process that followed brought a measure of closure to the Briggs family. In June of 2019, Desi Thomas pleaded guilty to the murder of Harry Briggs. As part of a plea agreement, he was sentenced to 57 years, with 52 of those years to be served in the Indiana Department of Correction and the remaining five in Marion County Community Corrections. The resolution, in accordance with the family's wishes, marked the end of a long and painful chapter for all who knew and loved Harry Briggs.
