On the morning of December 9, 2014, a violent confrontation unfolded in the parking lot shared by the City Hall and the public library in Lake Station, Indiana, resulting in the death of 84-year-old John Laco. The incident began around 10:30 a.m. when witnesses observed the elderly man in his vehicle holding a shotgun aloft and firing a single round into the air.
The gunfire shattered a window in the nearby library, which was occupied by approximately 20 patrons and employees at the time, prompting a lockdown of the facility. Laco remained in his car as law enforcement arrived on the scene, with the barrel of his weapon visible through the driver's side window.
When three Lake Station police officers approached and ordered him to drop the weapon, Laco reportedly exited his vehicle and pointed the shotgun directly at them. In response to the immediate threat, the officers opened fire, striking Laco multiple times in the head, chest, and hand. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators later characterized the event as a 'suicide by cop' scenario, noting that Laco had left a note for his family and had been struggling with personal issues. He had been displaced from his home following a fire in February of that same year—an incident during which Lake Station police officers had saved his life—and was reportedly angry with city officials who were pressuring him to demolish the fire-damaged property.
Subsequent investigations by the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force revealed that Laco was likely responsible for a separate shooting incident the previous night. A gunshot had been fired outside the home of Lake Station Mayor Keith Soderquist, and a shotgun shell found at that scene was consistent with the ammunition used by Laco during his final confrontation. Laco had been scheduled to appear at City Hall to provide a progress report on his home's demolition but failed to show up. Following a review of the evidence, the shooting of John Laco was ruled justified, and no charges were filed against the officers involved, as they were determined to have acted in self-defense to prevent further catastrophic events.
