In the spring of 2015, the life of Wesley Charles Ehrie, a 32-year-old male resident of Lafayette, Indiana, was tragically cut short. On the morning of April 21st, a dispute over a television set escalated into a fatal act of violence in the 900 block of North Ninth Street. Ehrie, a construction worker known for his love of the outdoors, particularly fishing and mushroom hunting, was shot.
Despite the efforts of medics who performed chest compressions at the scene, he succumbed to his injuries at St. Elizabeth East hospital.
The immediate investigation pointed to one primary suspect, 34-year-old Shane David Townsley of Flora, Indiana. Authorities identified Townsley as the sole individual responsible for Ehrie's murder. In the aftermath of the shooting, another man, Michael Borders, was taken into custody near the scene on allegations of possessing drugs and paraphernalia; however, his arrest was not directly linked to the homicide. The investigation revealed that Ehrie himself had been released from prison just two months prior, where he had served time for drug-related offenses, and was on probation at the time of his death.
Following the shooting, Shane David Townsley fled the state, leading law enforcement on a chase that ended in Tennessee. There, a confrontation with officers resulted in a shootout. Townsley's life came to an end during this exchange of gunfire, though it remains uncertain whether his death was the result of a self-inflicted wound or from the shots fired by police. With the death of the primary suspect, the criminal case surrounding Wesley Ehrie's murder reached a conclusive, albeit somber, end.
