In the early morning hours of April 24, 2022, a large block party at the Romney Meadows apartment complex in Lafayette, Indiana, turned tragic. Amidst the festivities, a gunfight erupted inside an apartment on Phipps Court, leading to the death of 34-year-old Tommy Marshall. The violence, which broke out around 4:30 a.m., also claimed the life of another man, Edward Roberson, and left four other men wounded.
The Tippecanoe County Coroner confirmed that Marshall's death was a homicide
resulting from gunshot wounds. The investigation that followed pointed to a dispute that began when individuals who were not residents of the apartment complex arrived and caused trouble. The Lafayette Police Department worked to piece together the events of that chaotic morning, seeking help from the public to identify those involved.
An early arrest was made in the case, with 23-year-old Anton D. Coats being taken into custody on suspicion of being a serious violent felon in possession of a firearm and carrying a handgun without a license. However, he was not charged in connection with the fatal shootings of Marshall and Roberson. The focus of the investigation soon shifted to another individual.
Ultimately, 21-year-old Kevon McCaster was identified as a primary suspect. Following his release from the hospital for injuries he sustained during the shooting, McCaster was arrested and faced multiple charges, including two counts of murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. In February 2024, a jury found McCaster guilty of the charges. He was subsequently sentenced to 140 years in prison for his role in the deaths of Tommy Marshall and Edward Roberson, bringing a measure of justice to the victims' families.
