In the spring of 2015, the life of 31-year-old Brianna Lyn Hefner-Ballor was tragically cut short in what was determined to be a murder-suicide. A resident of Valparaiso, Indiana, she was a dedicated professional working at the Porter County Juvenile Detention Center. Her life outside of work was centered around her young daughter.
On the evening of May 9, 2015, the ongoing turmoil in Brianna's personal life reached a devastating conclusion.
She and her husband of three years, 38-year-old Glenn Ballor, were in the process of a divorce. That night, Glenn Ballor called Brianna's mother and instructed her to come to their home to pick up their two-year-old daughter. Upon arriving, Brianna's mother found her granddaughter safe on the couch. Shortly after, a gunshot was heard from a bedroom. Inside, she discovered the bodies of her daughter and son-in-law.
The Porter County Sheriff's Department investigated the tragic event and confirmed that Glenn Ballor shot his wife before taking his own life. Evidence suggested a physical altercation had occurred before the shootings. Both Brianna and Glenn died from gunshot wounds. While Glenn had a criminal history that included arrests for burglary and theft, there were no prior reports of domestic violence at their residence.
The community mourned the loss of a woman described as a loving mother with an infectious laugh and a caring heart. An annual race, 'Bri's Race,' was established in her memory to raise awareness about domestic violence, a silent issue that tragically impacted her life and the lives of those who knew and loved her.
