Jessica Jane Hoffman, a 34-year-old White woman, had recently returned to her hometown of Richmond, Indiana, seeking safety. On December 1, 2021, her mother drove to Riverside, Ohio, to pick her up from the home she shared with her husband, Vincent Joel Allen Hoffman. Jessica told her mother that Vincent was using cocaine and making accusations, and she needed to get away.
She moved into her mother’s residence in a local mobile home park, hoping for a fresh start.
Just two days later, on the afternoon of Friday, December 3, that hope was violently extinguished. Vincent, then 24, drove from Ohio to the Hickory Drive mobile home park in Richmond. He kicked open the front door of the trailer, found Jessica inside, and shot her twice at close range. A relative discovered Jessica’s body before 2 p.m. that day. An autopsy later confirmed she died from gunshot wounds to her chest and head.
The Richmond Police Department investigation quickly centered on Jessica’s estranged husband. He was taken into custody the following day. When first questioned, Vincent denied any involvement in his wife’s death. However, investigators informed him that surveillance cameras had captured his SUV entering the mobile home park on the morning of the murder. Faced with this evidence, he began crying and confessed to killing Jessica.
In his confession, Vincent told detectives that he had been "up for a few days and doing cocaine." He claimed that "voices in his head," which he believed were "the devil," had told him to go shoot his wife. He cooperated with the investigation, directing police to a location along Interstate 70 in Wayne County where he had thrown his handgun and ammunition. The items were recovered, along with other evidence from Riverside with the help of local police.
Vincent Joel Allen Hoffman was charged with murder and held in the Wayne County Jail. He later pleaded guilty to the charge in Wayne Circuit Court. In October 2023, a judge sentenced him to 50 years in prison for the murder of his wife. He was given credit for 695 days already served, bringing the case to its legal conclusion.
