On May 20, 2024, Erika Painter, a 30-year-old Caucasian woman, was found deceased in a rural area of Wayne County, Indiana. Deputies from the Wayne County Sheriff's Office discovered her body while conducting a welfare check in the first block of Farlow Road, located about five miles south of downtown Richmond. Painter, a resident of Centerville, Indiana, had sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
At the scene, authorities also found 38-year-old Dustin Creech of Richmond with a gunshot wound.
As a deputy arrived at the location, two gunshots were heard, suggesting the incident was still unfolding. Creech was transported to Reid Health hospital in Richmond and then transferred to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, where he later died from his injuries. The Wayne County Sheriff's Office has stated that the initial findings of their investigation point to a murder-suicide, with Creech being the primary suspect in Painter's death. Sheriff Randy Retter assured the public that it was an isolated incident and there was no ongoing threat to the community.
Erika Painter was a mother to two children, Brodie and Blake. She was remembered by her family as someone who lived life to the fullest and was a beloved Pre-K teacher at Reid KinderCare. Her obituary described her as having a spunky and funny personality, and someone who would go to the end of the Earth for those she loved. A GoFundMe campaign was organized to help her family with funeral expenses.
