On October 2, 2015, authorities in Indianapolis, Indiana, initiated a homicide investigation following the discovery of 41-year-old female Janet Lee Cook, who had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the left side of her head. The incident occurred shortly after Cook had attempted to distance herself from a volatile relationship, having moved out of the home she shared with her boyfriend approximately two weeks prior to her death.
Investigators quickly turned their attention to domestic factors as they began to piece together the events leading up to the shooting, uncovering a pattern of controlling behavior and isolation that had characterized Cook's recent life.
The primary suspect identified in the case was Anthony P. Buehner, a man with whom Cook had been romantically involved. Family members and witnesses described a relationship where Buehner exerted significant control over Cook, restricting her access to a telephone and social media, and monitoring her interactions with her family, particularly her daughter. Tensions had reportedly escalated due to Buehner's jealousy regarding Cook's former partner, the father of her youngest son. Witnesses testified that Buehner had previously made verbal threats against Cook's life and had been physically aggressive toward her, further establishing a motive rooted in domestic abuse and possessiveness.
Law enforcement officers located and arrested Buehner shortly after the murder, initially taking him into custody alongside another individual, Kashon Smiley, after they were found in a stolen vehicle. Subsequent investigation yielded critical forensic evidence linking Buehner to the crime. Police searched a residence where Buehner had visited on the night of the murder and discovered a partially burned tank top belonging to him that still contained bloodstains. DNA testing later confirmed the presence of incriminating biological material on his clothing and other personal items. Additionally, testimony provided during the proceedings revealed that Buehner had made admissions to acquaintances regarding the shooting, further implicating himself in Cook's death.
In April 2018, the case went to trial in the Marion Superior Court, where prosecutors presented evidence of the abusive relationship, the forensic findings, and witness accounts of Buehner's behavior and statements. The jury found Anthony Buehner guilty of murder. On May 9, 2018, the court handed down a sentence of 63 years in prison for the crime.
