In the spring of 1992, a 26-year-old woman named Robin Fuldauer was working at a Payless ShoeSource in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was a graduate of Indiana University and had a bright future ahead of her, with dreams of starting a family. On April 8, 1992, what began as a normal workday ended in tragedy when she was fatally shot in the back of the head in the storeroom of the shoe store. Fuldauer was working alone that day, covering a shift for a coworker.
Her body was discovered that afternoon, and it was determined that a small amount of money, less than $100, had been taken from the cash register.
The investigation into Robin Fuldauer's death quickly revealed a chilling connection to a series of other murders that occurred along the Interstate 70 corridor in the Midwest. Her murder is believed to be the first in a string of killings attributed to an unidentified serial killer who would come to be known as the 'I-70 Killer.' This individual is thought to be responsible for at least five other murders in Kansas and Missouri in the weeks that followed Fuldauer's death. The victims were typically female clerks working alone in small retail stores located near the interstate.
Despite extensive investigation by a multi-state task force, the I-70 Killer has never been identified, and no arrests have been made in the murder of Robin Fuldauer or the other connected cases. Law enforcement officials were able to create a composite sketch of the suspect based on an eyewitness account from one of the later crime scenes. The suspect is described as a white male, and at the time of the murders, he was believed to be in his late 20s to mid-30s, with reddish or sandy-blond hair. Over the years, various suspects have been considered, but none have been definitively linked to the crimes. The case remains unsolved, leaving the family and friends of Robin Fuldauer without answers or justice for her untimely death.
