On a cold November evening in Indianapolis in 2016, a young couple's life together was tragically cut short in a pair of related shootings that left a child without parents and a case that remains unsolved. The female victim, 21-year-old Jessica Downey of Vincennes, was discovered first, found shot inside a car on Adams Street on the city's east side on November 23rd.
She was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to her injuries.
A short time later, police were called to a grim discovery in an alley a few blocks away, near 25th and Oxford Streets. There, they found the body of 20-year-old Evans Johnson of Camby, Downey's boyfriend. He had also been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators quickly determined the two shootings were connected and that Downey and Johnson were a couple who had recently moved to Indianapolis from Vincennes to build a new life with their young child.
In the years following the double homicide, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has continued to seek answers, releasing a surveillance video showing two persons of interest walking with Evans Johnson shortly before he was killed. The video captures Johnson walking behind the two individuals, who are then seen running away. Despite these efforts and pleas to the public for information, no arrests have been made in the murders of Jessica Downey and Evans Johnson. The identities of the persons of interest and any potential suspects remain unknown, leaving a lingering mystery and a family shattered by violence.
