In the autumn of 2015, a wave of violence gripped Indianapolis, and among its victims was 18-year-old Nigel Willis. On the evening of November 4, 2015, on the Far Eastside of the city, Willis was found critically injured from a gunshot wound in the 3600 block of Dubarry Road around 9:30 PM. He was rushed to Eskenazi Hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries. Nigel, a student at Marion Academy, was just beginning his adult life.
The investigation into the shooting moved quickly, and a week later, on November 11, 2015, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department announced an arrest. The suspect was identified as 18-year-old Dante Townsend. He faced preliminary charges of murder, criminal recklessness, and carrying a handgun without a license in connection with Willis's death.
The night Nigel Willis was killed was marked by a string of shootings in Indianapolis, leaving the community shaken. The arrest of Townsend brought a small measure of hope for justice to a city grappling with the devastating impact of gun violence on its youth.
