Dustin Michael Woods, a 29-year-old male, found his life cut tragically short in Indianapolis on the cold winter day of February 8, 2014. Known affectionately as 'Dusty' to his friends and family, he was a father of four who had a passion for the simple pleasures of life, such as cooking, fishing, and riding dirt bikes. His background was in construction and working as a cook, skills he used to provide for his loved ones.
The events that led to his untimely death unfolded at the Regal 8
Hotel on West Washington Street. Woods and a friend were in a room at the hotel, gathering items to sell at local pawn shops. Their day took a dark and violent turn when two men, Eric Johnson and Alejandro Mauricio, forced their way into the room brandishing a handgun. The intruders bound both Woods and his friend with tape before making off with their belongings.
Despite being tied up, Woods managed to free himself and pursued the robbers into the hotel parking lot. It was there, under the harsh lights of the motel, that the confrontation reached its fatal conclusion. One of the assailants fired a single, deadly shot, striking Woods in the head. He succumbed to the wound, his life extinguished in a senseless act of violence.
The investigation into the murder was swift. Law enforcement officials quickly identified and apprehended Eric Johnson and Alejandro Mauricio as the individuals responsible for the robbery and a life taken too soon. The wheels of justice turned, and both men were held accountable for their roles in the crime. After a trial, Eric Johnson was found guilty on multiple charges, including murder, robbery, and criminal confinement. He received a sentence of 98 years in prison. His accomplice, Alejandro Mauricio, was sentenced to 35 years for his part in the tragic events that led to the death of Dustin Woods.
